The Tunisian ambitions of Moroccan private healthcare group Akdital could run up against a veto from Carthage Palace. Its planned acquisition of Taoufik Hospitals Group (THG) is reportedly facing difficulties, Africa Intelligence reported on Tuesday.

Announced in December 2025, the deal was intended to help Akdital accelerate its expansion in Africa through the acquisition of THG for 900 million dirhams (around €85 million). The Tunisian group operates four healthcare facilities with a combined capacity of 600 beds, employs roughly 1,600 people and works with a network of 500 partner doctors.

According to sources cited by the French outlet, the Tunisian authorities’ reservations are linked to the Moroccan nationality of the buyer.

The potential roadblock comes against a backdrop of heightened diplomatic tensions between Rabat and Tunis. Relations between the two countries have sharply deteriorated since August 2022, when Tunisian President Kaïs Saïed gave an official welcome to the head of the Polisario Front, who had come to attend the Japan-African Union summit.

In response, Morocco recalled its ambassador to Tunis for consultations. He has not returned to his post since. Tunisia, for its part, adopted a similar measure regarding its ambassador in Rabat.
