Moroccan cultural entrepreneur and producer Brahim El Mazned has been awarded the 21st UNESCO-Sharjah Prize for Arab Culture, which this year is dedicated to music, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) announced.

Established by UNESCO with the support of the government of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates, the award will be presented on June 24 at UNESCO headquarters in Paris.

El Mazned shares the prize with Tanzania’s Dhow Countries Music Academy. According to UNESCO, he was recognized as a leading figure on the Arab and international cultural scene «for his commitment to music as a vehicle for transmission, dialogue and cultural exchange».

Through his various initiatives, the founder of Visa For Music and artistic director of the Timitar Festival has spent years promoting the richness and diversity of Moroccan and Arab musical expression well beyond their borders. The jury particularly praised the transnational dimension of his work, his role in fostering intercultural dialogue, his contribution to structuring and strengthening the arts sector, and his longstanding commitment to supporting young people.

«His career reflects a deep conviction: that music is at once a means of transmission, a space for dialogue and a powerful driver of cultural outreach», UNESCO said.

Reacting to the award, El Mazned said he received «this honor with deep emotion and great humility», describing it as «above all a recognition of the collective work carried out over many years in the service of culture, music and dialogue between cultures».
