An atmosphere of celebration swept through the iconic Times Square on Tuesday night as hundreds of Moroccans gathered to celebrate the Atlas Lions' qualification for the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup following their hard-fought victory over the Netherlands.
Wrapped in Morocco's national colors, waving red flags and chanting in support of the national team, fans turned the famous New York landmark into a sea of celebration. Ululations, patriotic songs and jubilant scenes echoed across the square in an atmosphere of pride and unity.
At several moments during the celebrations, the Moroccan national anthem rang out across Times Square, sung in unison by an emotional and jubilant crowd.
Red flags bearing the green star fluttered above the gathering as chants in support of the Atlas Lions echoed through the heart of Manhattan, drawing the attention of tourists and passersby.
Moroccans traveled from across New York City, including Brooklyn and Queens, as well as from neighboring states such as New Jersey and Connecticut, to celebrate the prestigious victory, secured after a high-level encounter against a formidable Dutch side.
The Moroccan supporters were also joined by many Mexicans, who took part in the festivities in a spirit of friendship and solidarity.
Together, the two communities celebrated the Atlas Lions' success, offering a powerful display of unity, sportsmanship and friendship in the heart of Manhattan.
Speaking to MAP, several Moroccan fans expressed their immense joy at the team's qualification. They said the Atlas Lions had once again demonstrated their talent, collective strength and quality against one of the tournament's strongest teams, adding that Morocco has all the ingredients needed to continue its impressive World Cup run.
