Journalist Ali Lmrabet was detained by police on Sunday, July 12, at Tangier airport. The action was executed under the directive of judicial authorities, rather than being an administrative decision, Yabiladi has learned from a source close to the case.
The journalist is reportedly «the subject of several complaints lodged by individuals and institutions, accusing his online content of defamation, slander, or the dissemination of false information».
«Some complaints involve direct accusations against officials, institutions, and individuals, which have allegedly tarnished reputations and necessitate legal action.»
Our source emphasized that the arrest does not equate to a declaration of guilt. Ali Lmrabet is presumed innocent until a final judgment is rendered.
His arrest was confirmed by his wife Laura Feliú in statements to the EFE news agency, and has been condemned by the «Moroccan Body for the Support of Political Prisoners». The NGO issued a statement urging the journalist’s «immediate release».
This development follows two months after the emergence of recordings purportedly linked to Canadian-based opposition figure Hicham Jerando.
