Morocco to add 60,000 hotel beds ahead of 2030 World Cup

Morocco plans to add 60,000 hotel beds by 2030, an increase of around 20% over its current capacity, as it prepares to co-host the FIFA World Cup with Spain and Portugal, Tourism Minister Fatim-Zahra Ammor told Reuters.

«We see the 2030 FIFA World Cup as an accelerator, not an end in itself», Ammor said, adding that the government is investing more than 190 billion dirhams in transport, airport, stadium and urban infrastructure projects ahead of the tournament. «We need to make investments that create lasting value for Moroccan tourism», she added.

Morocco has already added 45,000 hotel beds over the past four years, bringing the total to just over 300,000, and aims to welcome 26 million tourists by 2030, up from nearly 20 million last year.

Ammor said the country's «next phase of growth» would focus on attracting more visitors from China, the United States and the Middle East through improved air connectivity, while expanding tourism beyond traditional destinations such as Marrakech and Agadir.
