Known as the largest city on the United-States–Canada borders, Detroit is now drawing inspiration from Moroccan architecture. The metropolitan is building an American Riad to provide work for its unemployed residents and help youngsters have a space for their creativity.

According to an article published today by Next City, the cultural hub is initiated by Ulysses Newkirk an active member of the Oakland Avenue Artists Coalition and The Ghana ThinkTank, a coalition of artists from Ghana, Morocco, Indonesia and other countries. The American Riad is assigned the task of reactivating Detroit’s North end Neighborhood and celebrating its changing demographics.

Mimicking the Moroccan typical riad, the American version will contain, according to the same source, a courtyard, beautiful tiles, a pool or a fountain and lush foliage. The riad is under construction creating work opportunities for residents of the area.

«America Riad project leaders are aiming for a sustainable renewal model, independent of the influence of outside developers (…) in total the project will cost about $200,000. About $40,000 of that has already been raised and more funding is being sought from a combination of sources», Next City reports.

«rather than demonizing Muslims and immigrants as a threat to American culture and safety (…) instead looks at how we can adopt elements of Islamic and African Culture to solve American problems», the Ghana thinkTank argues.
