The Kingdom of Morocco reiterates its commitment to an open, frank, inclusive and operational Western Mediterranean Forum, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Nasser Bourita, said Sunday in Algiers.
Speaking at the 14th meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the Western Mediterranean Forum, commonly referred to as 5+5 Dialogue, Bourita said that this forum, which is aimed at engaging in a calm dialogue and developing fruitful cooperation, is facing various challenges in the areas of security, environment, socio-economic issues, culture and identity. He stated that the 5+5 Dialogue is expected to demonstrate its relevance, as long as it provides the «right framework» for «lucid dialogue, sincere commitment and concerted action».
In this regard, Bourita officially presented Morocco's proposal to host a 5 + 5 Ministerial Conference dedicated to the youth, noting that this conference is aimed at setting up a «Regional Agenda» for the youth with concrete and innovative projects.
Regarding inclusive and shared economic and social development, Bourita noted the «incredible contrast» between economic integration in the North and South of the Western Mediterranean region, noting that if Northern partners are characterized by a strong economic integration (more than 70%), in the South, on the other hand, the Maghreb countries form one of the least integrated regions of the world (less than 5%).
«The gap between the two shores is, therefore, real, but the gap within the south shore itself is disappointing», the minister pointed out, adding that this situation requires from us a stronger commitment, for an innovative, inclusive and sustainable approach to trade development, investment and employment.
The Moroccan minister underlined the Kingdom’s fruitful cooperation with several countries of the Western Mediterranean Forum, including Spain and France, in the issue of migration.
Bourita said that Morocco will host in December 2018 the 1st International Conference on the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration.
