The Haskovo Regional Court (Bulgaria) gave its instruction on Tuesday to keep the Moroccan national identified as Naufal Zahri, an alleged terrorist wanted by the Interpol, in custody for 90 days, reports the Sofia Globe on Tuesday.
Wanted by Morocco via an Interpol warrant for terrorism, the defendant is prosecuted in the kingdom for setting up a group to commit acts of terrorism, the illegal use and possession of firearms directed against the national security and public order in Morocco, receiving training, raising funds and recruiting large groups of people to join the so-called «Islamic state» terrorist group, said the same source.
The spokesperson of the Bulgarian Prosecutor-General’s office, Roumyana Arnaudova told on Tuesday the Bulgarian national TV that the 90 days are set as a deadline for the extradition of the suspect to Morocco.
For the record, Naufal Zahri was arrested on January the 13th in the borders between Turkey and Bulgaria. He attempted to enter the country by mingling with a group of refugees who were requesting humanitarian assistance. The terrorist presented a fake ID while carrying a Syrian identity that was found later in his luggage.
He appeared before the court on Monday, claiming that he was not a terrorist and that he had lived in Syria for four years with his family. His wife and children are currently in Morocco. Before the judge, he also confirmed being aware of the arrest warrant issued by the country, which was behind his attempt to join Bulgaria using a fake ID.
His lawyer, Anton Popov, said the terrorist did not want to be extradited to Morocco because «he fears being killed in a prison.»
