UN Security Council is to start consultations tonight for the adoption of a new resolution on the Sahara.

The draft resolution, already sent to the council’s members, is expected to «call for the final withdrawal of the Polisario elements in the buffer zones and urge the other parties to exercise restraint», a source told Yabiladi.

«Unlike last year, Morocco can accept sending a technical committee to the region with the exception that it would not be limited to El Guerguerate and would monitor all buffer zones», added the same source.

The prevailing tension in the region requires substantial funding and reinforcement from UN peacekeepers so that MINURSO can cover the entire area and report the slightest movement.
