United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres announced on Tuesday that he has appointed seven distinguished experts as members of the Civil Society Advisory Board on the Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse, including Morocco's Najat Maalla M'jid.

The Board is intended to foster cooperation with civil society, experts and organizations as part of the United Nations efforts to combat sexual exploitation and abuse.

The Civil Society Advisory Board, comprising leading civil society figures and experts, will provide the UN chief with advice on measures to strengthen prevention of and response to sexual exploitation and abuse.

Ms. Maalla M'jid is a medical doctor in pediatrics, who has been involved for the past three decades in the protection of vulnerable children.

She is a member of Morocco's National Human Rights Council and served as the UN Special Rapporteur on the sale and sexual exploitation of children between 2008 and 2014.

Ms. Maalla M'jid is also the founder and an active member of the non-governmental organization BAYTI, which addresses the situation of children living in the street in Morocco.
