Ali Lmrabet released as investigation continues

Moroccan journalist Ali Lmrabet was released on Wednesday after appearing before the King's Prosecutor at the Casablanca Criminal Court, who decided to continue the investigation while ordering additional technical examinations.

According to a statement from the prosecutor, Lmrabet was questioned over the acts attributed to him in accordance with legal procedures and was granted all the guarantees and rights provided by law, including undergoing a medical examination.

After reviewing the case file, the public prosecutor's office decided to release him, return the items seized during his arrest, two computers, a storage device and a mobile phone, and proceed with further investigative steps and technical expertise. The statement added that the appropriate legal measures will be taken once the investigation is completed.

Lmrabet had been arrested at Tangier Airport on the basis of several outstanding search notices issued against him over suspected acts that constitute criminal offenses under Moroccan law.

According to the prosecutor, the case concerns the publication of online content allegedly containing defamation and slander targeting individuals and institutions, as well as insults against legally established bodies. He had been transferred to the headquarters of the National Brigade of the Judicial Police (BNPJ) in Casablanca and placed in police custody pending questioning.
