Ouahbi: «The quarter-finals gave us certainties for the future»

Morocco national football team head coach Mohamed Ouahbi said on Tuesday in Salé that the Atlas Lions' run at the 2026 FIFA World Cup was a source of pride, given the quality of football the team displayed throughout the tournament.

Speaking at a press conference held at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Maâmoura following Morocco's participation in the 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, Ouahbi said the team's ambition had been to go as far as possible in the competition. However, he added that their quarter-final exit against France also provides an opportunity to reflect and identify areas for future improvement.

Assessing Morocco's performance against France, Ouahbi said: «We lacked attacking sharpness, and we could have done more to disrupt France's game. They were a very strong opponent».

«We came away from the quarter-finals with certainties, and that is the most important thing for us», he added, noting that these lessons would help the coaching staff make the right decisions going forward.

Ouahbi praised the players who took part in the World Cup, saying they «carried us to the quarter-finals and made us dream», while stressing that «the players who were not selected will also have an important role to play in the challenges ahead».

According to the coach, «the important thing is to remain demanding in the development of our players and in the quality of the players we recruit if we want to continue going deep into major tournaments». He added that Morocco has the talent and quality to surpass its historic 2022 World Cup campaign in Qatar.

Regarding his assistant João Sacramento, Ouahbi confirmed that the Portuguese coach will remain part of Morocco's technical staff. "He has invested enormously and has become deeply attached to Morocco. His work has been invaluable because he brings so much to the national team," he said.
