Spanish Foreign Minister Josep Borrell said, on Monday in Rabat, that his country is committed to strengthening consular services in Morocco to face the growing demand for Schengen visas at Spanish consulates in the Kingdom.

During a press briefing after his meeting with Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, Borrell acknowledged that the Spanish consular system is «overwhelmed».

«We are overwhelmed (...). This year we will receive 250,000 visa applications, which is an annual increase of 10% in recent years», said the Spanish minister.

«We apologize to the Moroccan citizens for the delays», said the Spanish official who will meet, in the afternoon, with the consuls of Spain in Morocco on ways to solve this problem, assuring that the Spanish consular services in the Kingdom will do their best to overcome this situation.

He added that a new appointment request system will be set up to shorten long delays.

The Moroccan tourism in Spain in 2018 was, for the first time, more important than in the opposite direction (from Spain to Morocco), according to provisional data by the different administrations of the Iberian country.
