The Netherland’s burqa ban is expected to come into force, Thursday, prohibiting women from wearing the garment in schools, hospitals, public buildings and public transport, Deutsche Welle (DW) reports.
The law passed in June, 2018, will affect 150 burqa and niqab wearing women in the Netherlands, the same source says. «It is forbidden to wear clothes that cover the face», the Dutch Interior Ministry said. «In these facilities, it is important for public safety to be able to recognize and look at each other», the ministry added.
According to the Dutch Interior Ministry, it is the responsibility of schools, hospitals and drivers to deny access to women wearing a full-face veil or to call the police.
The public transport sector, however, has announced that drivers will not stop (bus, tram, train or metro) to chase a woman who is violating the ban.
In addition to that, several hospitals in the Netherlands also stated that they «would not refuse to provide health care» to women wearing the garment.
AFP recalls that the burqa ban in the Netherlands will allow women to wear the full-face veil in the streets, unlike similar laws implemented in France.
