The city of Rabat has been designated the African capital of culture for the period 2020-2021, the organizing committee announced on Saturday.

The decision of the Committee of African Capitals of Culture was taken following its meeting, held early February at the headquarters of UCLG Africa in Rabat, to examine the conditions for organizing the celebration of African Capitals in Morocco following the withdrawal of the city of Marrakesh.

The committee deliberated on the merits of the candidacy of Rabat and on the conditions that this city must fulfill to be the mirror of African culture for the period 2020-2021, said the committee in a press release.

A team has been set up to work on the general programming of the various planned events and activities.
