The Executive Council of the African Union adopted, Saturday, a decision urging the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights to visit the Sahara. The decision comes ahead of an African Union troika meeting on the Western Sahara conflict.
The Moroccan parliament will examine, Wednesday, a bill on joining the African Continental Free Trade Area. As in January 2017 with the Constitutive Act of the African Union, having «SADR» among the parties that signed AfCFTA shouldn’t be a stumbling block.
In a conference held, Saturday, in Algeria, the Polisario denounced Morocco’s rejection of the African Union participation in the Western Sahara process. This rejection comes after the body announced that a presidential troika is the only party allowed to address the conflict.
Heading the African Union, Egypt is trying to play a role in the Libyan crisis. On Tuesday, April 23, Cairo hosted a meeting to legitimize Khalifa Haftar’s offensive, without inviting Morocco, which has a different opinion on the Libyan crisis.
Cairo is hosting the second meeting of the African Union Specialized Technical Committee on Transport, Transcontinental and Interregional Infrastructure, Energy and Tourism. The event is attended by Morocco's Secretary of State to Minister of Transport Najib Boulif and a Polisario delegation.
Earlier this week, reports suggested that members of the Polisario Front and a Moroccan delegation at the African Union clashed at the Pan-African Parliament in Midrand (South Africa). South Africa has joined the African Union presidential troika on the Sahara. Rabat will have to pay close attention to the presidential election in South Africa, which will shape the country’s position on the regional conflict.
