Throughout this year, a number of countries have opened diplomatic representations in the Sahara, mainly in Dakhla and Laayoune. According to El Espanol, countries from the European Union are also ready to follow suit, namely Italy and Portugal.

According to the same source, negotiations with Rome would be underway. Morocco and Italy signed, on November 1, in Rabat a declaration of multidimensional strategic partnership.

Meetings between Nasser Bourita and Luigi Di Maio are frequent. The Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs visited the Italian capital on October 7 to assess bilateral cooperation and the Libyan crisis.

The last phone call between the two foreign ministers dates back to December 11. On this occasion, Di Maio congratulated Bourita on the resumption of diplomatic ties between Morocco and Israel.

With Portugal, relations are excellent. El Espanol affirms that the Moroccan Foreign Minister had a phone call with his Portuguese counterpart on December 10, on the same day  the Trump administration announced its decision on the Sahara.

Augusto Santo Silva also praised the position adopted by Morocco during the Guerguerate crisis and its commitment to the 1991 ceasefire.
