The nighttime curfew to be implemented during the month of Ramadan was «imposed out of necessity, although it was a difficult decision», the head of government said on Thursday. Speaking on the sidelines of the government council held online, Saadeddine El Othmani stressed that the government «does not want to restrict the movement of citizens, especially that Moroccans have particular rituals during Ramadan».

«It was primordial to make this decision to avoid the increase of Covid-19-related deaths among citizens. We have delayed the decision for days», he explained, referring to the increase in the number of positive cases for the third consecutive week.

«Our experts have warned against a third wave. In order to stop it, the Steering Committee and the government decided to extend the preventive measures in force for the holy month», he added.

«The sectors affected by this decision are studying the situation with the Economic Vigilance Committee to make the necessary decisions, in parallel with listening and interacting with complaints from professionals», he said.

«We will come out of this ordeal and we will avoid the worst. Our country will emerge as a winner», he concluded.
