The Moroccan government has decided, based on a proposal by the Minister of Economy and Finance and after consultation with the Minister of the Interior, to expropriate real estate belonging to Algeria in Rabat.

The decision, published in the Bulletin officiel of March 13, 2024, aims to facilitate the extension of the central headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Expropriation proceedings had already been initiated against the three properties

The expropriation of these properties is justified by the «public utility which requires the extension of administrative buildings for the benefit of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs», in accordance with law no. 81-7 of April 16, 1982.

The Algerian representatives have two months to submit their comments or appeal to the courts.

Algeria cut diplomatic ties with Morocco on August 21, 2021. Since then, it has kept its consulate in Casablanca open.
