German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said on Friday that Morocco and Germany have agreed to closer cooperation plans on migration policy.

«We want to attract well-trained people and improve cooperation on repatriations», Baerbock said after meeting with her Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita.

The governments of Germany and Morocco seek to «jointly explore how we can strengthen each other as societies through collaboration», the German minister said, quoted by AFP.

Germany, facing an annual shortage of 400,000 skilled workers, intends to «make greater use of legal entry opportunities». «People without the right to stay cannot remain», the Minister noted.

Migration was central to the meeting between Baerbock and Bourita, who insisted the dialogue shouldn't be about «putting pressure» on transit countries like Morocco but should adopt a «holistic approach» focusing on cooperation. Bourita also noted that «illegal migration» affects only 0.06 percent of the world's population.

In January, Germany signed a migration agreement with Morocco for the repatriation of migrants and the recruitment of skilled workers from Morocco.

Baerbock and Bourita also discussed plans to support the production and export of «green hydrogen» from wind and solar power in Morocco.

It is worth noting that Morocco and Germany started a new chapter in their relations in February 2022, following previous differences. Berlin backed Morocco's autonomy plan for the Sahara during the same year.
