The organizers of the 16th edition of the Africa Eco Race, an annual rally raid organized in France and run in North and West Africa, plan to cross the El Guerguerate border crossing into Mauritania.

The program includes five stages in Morocco, including one from Laayoune to Dakhla. Participants will have a rest day in Dakhla on January 5, before entering Mauritanian territory.

On November 30, 2023, the Polisario Front warned the organizers of the 15th edition of this competition against «crossing the territory of the Saharawi Republic, including its land, sea, and air spaces (...) they are responsible for the consequences that could arise from their entry and crossing of Saharawi national territory».

These threats did not prevent the rally from passing through El Guerguerate without incident on January 8, 2024.

The 16th edition of the Africa Eco Race is scheduled to run from December 29, 2024, to January 12, 2025.
