Following the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime, Morocco has officially made contact with the new Syrian authorities. Foreign Affairs Minister Nasser Bourita held a phone conversation with his Syrian counterpart, Asaad Al-Shibani, on Monday, December 30, according to a statement from the Islamist authorities in Damascus.

The Moroccan Foreign Minister «emphasized Morocco's support for the Syrian people, Syria's sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as the commonalities between both countries», the same source states.

The spokesperson for the new Syrian authorities has already announced to the press that the kingdom plans to reopen its embassy in Damascus, which has been closed since November 2011. «Morocco is communicating with the new Syrian leaders to reopen its diplomatic mission. Other Arab countries might make the same decision», he revealed.

As a reminder, Moroccan authorities expelled Bashar al-Assad's accredited ambassador to Rabat in July 2012. The former Syrian regime recognized «SADR».
