After leaving Laayoune for the Tindouf camps, a Sahrawi activist known for his outspoken criticism of the Moroccan monarchy is now reconsidering his decision. Sidi Mohamed Alouate wishes to return to Morocco, according to a statement from the Forum of Support for the Autonomists of Tindouf (FORSATIN) published online. In an audio message reviewed by Yabiladi, Alouate declared he is «ready for anything» to return, even referring to Brahim Ghali as the «leader of a criminal gang».

His family members, residing in Es-Smara and Laayoune, have also issued pleas to human rights organizations, urging them to help facilitate his return. Alouate is currently in Mauritania.

«The Polisario leadership never fully trusted Sidi Mohamed Alouate, despite his vocal support for their cause in protests and on social media. He was marginalized and accused of being a Moroccan spy. Fearing imprisonment in the Polisario’s notorious prisons, he fled the Tindouf camps and sought refuge in Mauritania», a Moroccan source close to the case told Yabiladi.

The same source noted that Alouate belongs to the Zarguiyyines tribe, rather than the Rguibates, which dominates the Polisario leadership. Since Brahim Ghali's appointment as head of the Front in July 2016, non-Rguibates members have been increasingly sidelined, as seen in the case of Aminatou Haidar.
