Last night, all European nations within the UN Security Council, including Slovenia, cast their votes in favor of Resolution 2797. This unanimous decision underscores the unified stance of the EU's twenty-seven member states on the Sahara issue, a position reaffirmed today in an official statement.
«The European Union welcomes the extension of MINURSO's mandate until October 31, 2026, and expresses its readiness to support the negotiations led by the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy, Staffan de Mistura, in line with the United Nations Security Council resolution,» announced EU Foreign Affairs spokesperson Anouar El Anouni.
«The European Union reiterates its strong backing for the UN-led political process, aiming for a fair, lasting, and mutually acceptable resolution to the conflict, grounded in Morocco's autonomy proposal and respecting the UN Charter.»
Recently, on October 3, the European Union and Morocco finalized a new provisional agricultural agreement, encompassing products from Western Sahara. This accord was pivotal in France's efforts to persuade Slovenia to support Resolution 2797 during last night's vote.
