Moroccan player Omar El Hilali was targeted by racist chants during the derby between his club Espanyol and Barcelona (1–4) on Sunday, once again bringing the issue of racism in stadiums to the forefront.
At the Camp Nou, sections of the crowd directed offensive remarks at the Moroccan international, prompting stadium officials to intervene several times over the loudspeakers, urging fans to stop such behavior.
Tensions rose during the match, particularly after a clash between El Hilali and Barcelona midfielder Gavi, which resulted in both players receiving yellow cards. The chants resumed in the 57th minute, further heightening an already charged atmosphere.
This is not an isolated incident, as Spanish stadiums have seen a worrying rise in racist behavior in recent months. Anti-Islamic chants were reported during a friendly between Spain and Egypt at Espanyol’s stadium, while similar abuse targeted Moroccan-origin player Lamine Yamal ahead of the Champions League quarter-final between Atlético Madrid and Barcelona.
El Hilali himself had already been the target of racist abuse earlier this season, during a La Liga match against Elche, when striker Rafa Mir was accused of directing an offensive remark at him, reportedly saying, «You came on a small boat».
