King Mohammed VI has granted pardons to 1,376 people convicted by various courts across Morocco on the occasion of Eid al-Adha, including some who are in detention and others who are at liberty, the Ministry of Justice said in a statement.
According to the ministry, 1,195 of the beneficiaries are currently in detention:
- A pardon of the remainder of the prison or custodial sentence for 13 inmates.
- A reduction of the prison or custodial sentence for 1,180 inmates.
- The commutation of a life sentence to a fixed-term sentence for one inmate.
- The commutation of a death sentence to life imprisonment for one inmate.
A further 161 beneficiaries are at liberty:
- A pardon of the prison sentence, or the remainder of it, for 63 people.
- A pardon of the prison sentence, while maintaining the fine, for four people.
- A pardon of the fine for 78 people.
- A pardon of both the prison sentence and the fine for 15 people.
- A pardon of the fine and the remainder of the prison sentence for one person.
The King also granted pardons to inmates convicted in extremism and terrorism cases who received royal approval after formally expressing their commitment to the nation’s fundamental principles, sacred values, and institutions, revising their ideological views, and rejecting extremism and terrorism. They number 20:
- A pardon of the fine and the remainder of the custodial sentence for two inmates.
- A pardon of the remainder of the custodial sentence for 12 inmates.
- A reduction of the custodial sentence for six inmates.
