Italian authorities have arrested a 21-year-old Italian-Moroccan man on suspicion of international terrorism after he posted messages on social media praising attacks carried out by the ISIS and expressing his intention to emulate the car-ramming attack that injured eight people in Modena on May 15, the Italian news agency ANSA reported on Monday.
According to investigators, the suspect, who was born in Italy to Moroccan parents and lives in Brianza, had recently posted messages glorifying attacks against Christians and Western countries and calling for «martyrdom». Two days before his arrest, he reportedly published statements suggesting he was ready to take action.
The Milan Prosecutor’s Office ordered his arrest on terrorism charges. Prosecutors said the suspect was planning to travel to Morocco on June 9.
The arrest comes weeks after the Modena attack, in which eight people were injured, including four critically. The driver, identified as 31-year-old Italian citizen of Moroccan origin Salim El Koudri, was arrested after being stopped by bystanders. El Koudri, an economics graduate with no criminal record, was unemployed and had reportedly suffered from schizoid mental disorders since 2022.
He was charged with attempted murder, but Italian authorities did not retain the terrorism aggravating factor, concluding that he had acted during a psychotic episode.
