Samir El Mourabet’s dribbling was not forged on football’s biggest stages. For the Strasbourg defender, technique came long before physical maturity. His ability to play under pressure, protect the ball in tight spaces and break lines with his left foot was shaped far from Ligue 1 stadiums. Released by Strasbourg’s academy after struggling with weight issues, El Mourabet turned to futsal, never imagining that this detour would reshape his entire career.

What initially looked like a Plan B soon became a real platform for expression. El Mourabet quickly stood out, earning call-ups to France’s youth futsal teams. Over several seasons, he developed in a demanding environment where speed of execution, sharp decision-making and technical precision are non-negotiable.

His performances eventually put him back on Strasbourg’s radar. The Alsatian club offered him a second chance and brought him back into its development system. Returning to eleven-a-side football, El Mourabet carried with him a technical baggage rarely acquired through the traditional pathway. His left foot, his composure when playing out from the back and his ease in tight areas quickly became his strongest assets.

This distinctive profile gradually helped him climb the ranks all the way to professional football. It was an unusual rise for a player whose journey once seemed destined to follow a very different course.

Ouahbi’s trust

His profile soon caught Mohamed Ouahbi’s attention. Impressed by his technical quality and maturity on the ball, the Morocco U20 coach kept a close eye on him. In 2025, he wanted to include him in his squad for the U20 World Cup. Strasbourg, however, refused to release their player.

Although Samir came close to being part of a U20 world-title campaign, his World Cup story did not end there. A few months later, Mohamed Ouahbi called up the young Strasbourg player as he looked to inject fresh blood into the senior national team, which was seeking new momentum after AFCON 2025.

His solid Ligue 1 performances with Strasbourg had not gone unnoticed. He soon confirmed his potential in friendly matches with the Mountakhab. In a sector where competition is particularly fierce, El Mourabet still managed to force his way into Morocco’s central defensive pairing.

«The next target is the World Cup», Samir El Mourabet said last March. Coming from a young player still on the rise, the statement may have sounded bold. But it also reflected the confidence he has built over the years, through setbacks, detours and hard-earned progress.

At the 2026 World Cup, Samir El Mourabet stands as one of the Moroccan national team’s most unexpected bets. Rejected by elite football as a teenager, shaped in sports halls and on futsal courts before finding his way back to the professional game, he embodies a simple truth: the most unlikely paths can sometimes lead to the most beautiful destinations.
