The Amazigh Space has officially opened at the Alhambra in Granada, becoming the first museum in Europe dedicated to Amazigh culture. Spanning 162 square meters, the new exhibition space brings together nearly 200 historical artifacts that highlight the Amazigh contribution to the history of Al-Andalus. The center is also dedicated to research, outreach and the promotion of Amazigh heritage through a range of educational and cultural programs, reports Granada Hoy.
For the project's backers, the choice of the Alhambra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, carries strong symbolic significance. The former Nasrid Kingdom of Granada occupies a central place in the history of Al-Andalus and in the legacy of Amazigh communities, whose influence can still be seen across many aspects of the region's cultural heritage.
The initiative was spearheaded by the Board of Trustees of the Alhambra and the Dr. Leila Mezian Foundation. It also benefited from the contribution of diplomat Jorge Dezcallar and his wife, Teresa Eça, who donated a collection of Amazigh jewelry. Visitors can also discover textiles, ceramics, everyday objects and other artifacts from different regions of North Africa.
In June 2025, the Dr. Leila Mezian Foundation signed an agreement to establish the space. The partnership between Dounia Benjelloun, vice-president of the foundation, and Rodrigo Ruiz Jiménez Carrera, director-general of the Alhambra Board of Trustees, led to the creation of the center in the Carmen de los Porcel building.
The exhibition explores both artistic expression and social organization through a visitor journey divided into themed sections across two floors.
The museum's design was developed by Acciona Cultura, which combined graphic displays, historical maps, interactive features and audiovisual content to place the collections and their historical context into perspective.
