Morocco to roll out drought resistant durum wheat varieties

The National Institute for Agricultural Research (INRA) and the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA) are intensifying their efforts on developing resilient durum wheat varieties to better equip Moroccan agriculture against climate challenges and drought. Following years of trials, three innovative varieties are set to enhance production. Leading the way is Jawahir, a genetic variant offering heightened yield potential, tailored to regional needs.

According to further ICARDA data, SNRTnews underscores Nacht, applauding «its performance in both irrigated zones and oases, showcasing versatility across diverse farming systems». The third variety, Sabil, stands out for «its exceptional productivity, drought resilience, superior grain qualities (color and size), and abundant straw production—a crucial resource for livestock feed».

These varieties, developed under the «Bold» project, are transitioning from the research phase to distribution among farmers, as reported by the same source. The first two are currently «being multiplied by the National Seed Marketing Company (SOGAP) and will be accessible to farmers by 2027 and 2028». The third has been officially added to INRA’s catalogue.
