King Mohammed VI had previously planned to visit Monrovia on the 3rd and 4th of June for the 51st Summit of the ECOWAS which should examine Morocco's bid to join the regional integration organization as a full-fledged member, as indicated Thursday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
During the royal visit, the program had scheduled a meeting with the Liberian president, discussions with Heads of States of the other member-countries of the organization, as well as a speech during the Summit, according to the Ministry in a communiqué published by news agency MAP.
Nevertheless, during the last few days, influent member-countries of the ECOWAS have decided to reduce significantly their level of participation to the summit protesting against the participation of the Israeli Prime Minister, indicates the communiqué, which also discloses the astonishment of some member-countries following said invitation.
«His Majesty the King, may God assist Him, wishes His first visit to a Summit of the ECOWAS not to interfere in a context of tension and controversy, and would like to avoid any amalgam or confusion», the communiqué concludes.
