A total of 15.244 tons of cannabis resin was seized Wednesday by policemen in Tangier, the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) said Thursday.

The drug was found on board a Morocco-registered semi-trailer truck which was spotted at the Boukhalef neighbourhood in Tangier, the source added in a statement.

This operation is part of the ongoing investigations conducted by Tangier’s Prefectural Police Department, in coordination with the General Directorate for Territorial Surveillance (DGST), which had enabled the seizure on Saturday of 13.75 tons of cannabis resin at the port of Tangier-Med, bringing the total quantity of the drug seized to 28.994 tons, the source pointed out.

Initial investigations reveal the involvement of a cross-border criminal network in the trafficking of these large quantities of drugs, the statement said, adding that this network is suspected of having created fictitious companies to hide its illicit activities and to maintain links with criminal networks in Morocco or Europe.

Tangier’s judicial police will continue their investigations in close collaboration with the services of the DGST, and under the supervision of the competent prosecutor's office, in order to arrest all the people involved in this operation and to unveil all the activities of this criminal network.
