A Moroccan fisherman perished in a fire that broke out on Friday in a Spanish trawler where he was working, said the Moroccan consulate general in Girona (north-east Spain) on Saturday.

Aged 50, the victim drowned after he jumped off the blazing ship, along with other crew members, said the source, adding that his corpse was fished out by the rescue services.

The fire broke out when the Spanish ship was sailing the French territorial waters.

The four other crew members were rescued alive and rushed to the Figueres hospital for hypothermia.

The Moroccan consular services in Girona visited on Saturday the victim's family to send the body back to the Kingdom.
