A mysterious spice featured in the ingredients of halal sausages sold in Norway has stirred controversy among the Norwegian Muslim community.

According Russia news agency Sputnik, the halal sausages in question strangely include an unknown ingredient called «pork salt». The product which is called «chicken grill» is however made out of turkey, the same source said, quoting Norwegian newspaper Nationen.

«Calling a turkey product 'chicken grill' is so stupid that it must be a mistake. If not, it's an obvious case of misleading labelling», Gunstein Instefjord from the Norwegian Consumer Council told the same source.

The same official said that he has never heard of a spice called «pork salt» and indicated that including this ingredient does not make the product halal.

Commenting on the controversial ingredients of the product, the general manager of the manufacturer «Åkerberg Skoglunn Pølsemakeri» Roger Lund said that it is a «human error».

«It goes without saying that you don't put pork meat into a halal product. Pork is much more expensive than chicken», he argued.

The sausage-maker released a report stressing that «the spice mix had been wrongly attributed», adding that the «spice comes from a German factory and was originally labelled flavoring roast pork type». The company said that the spice doesn’t include pig meat.

The company explained that the turkey label was a mistake and that the sausages are made of chicken meat.
