Spain recorded 23,600 undocumented arrivals between January and October, 47% less that what was registered during the same period last year. According to an internal report of the European Commission, the «decrease is largely owed to renewed efforts by Morocco to stop migrants from departing from its coastline», El Pais reports.
«The preventive efforts by Moroccan authorities continue to be effective, and they are key to understanding the strong reduction in arrivals in Spain during 2019», said the European Commission.
Cooperation between Spain and EU partners has resulted in rewarding Morocco aid worth €180 million.
According to the report, Morocco is also an «important partner in the development of regular migration», the same source added.
The document, presented on Wednesday by the European Commissioner for Migration, Dimitris Avramópulos, however warned against to a «slight increase» in arrivals, registered recently from Algeria.
