Just as farmers in Errachidia province were counting on a stronger agricultural season after years of drought, the return of the desert locust has raised new concerns. Swarms have been reported in several oases and farming areas, fueling fears for palm groves, crops and the livelihoods of hundreds of families who rely on agriculture in the region.
In a fresh warning that highlights a silent crisis threatening food security and national sovereignty, the Economic, Social and Environmental Council has revealed that nearly 75 percent of Morocco’s local wheat and barley varieties have disappeared in just five decades, driven by the standardization of production methods, the spread of hybrid varieties and the intensification of agricultural exploitation.
