Algerian journalists have created a body to «fight against the media blackout imposed by Morocco on the situation in Western Sahara, especially after the resumption of armed action on November 13», the Algerian news agency APS reported.
The creation of the body named «The Association of Algerian Journalists in Solidarity with the Sahrawi People» was planned on October 22 on the «national press day» in Algeria. The Polisario Front in a letter by Brahim Ghali welcomed the plan.
However, the Algerian body ignores the situation in Algeria. Amnesty International launched an international campaign on November 20 for the release of Algerian journalist Khaled Drareni, sentenced on appeal in September to two years in prison. The case was discussed on Thursday, November 26, in the European Parliament when addressing the human rights situation in Algeria.
Less well known than Drareni, journalist Abdelkrim Zeghileche, director of Radio Sarbacane (independent), was sentenced on August 24 to two years in prison. Others endured lengthy questioning by the police for their writings, such as Mustapha Bendjama, editor-in-chief of the regional newspaper Le Provincial.
