A new Atlas lion cub was born in August at the Rabat National Zoological Garden (JZN). This is the first birth since the formation of a new Atlas lion group in 2022.

The cub is currently under the close observation of zoological and veterinary teams, receiving specialized care for this endangered species. At four months old, the young lion is gradually integrating with the rest of the Atlas lion group and will be visible to visitors in the Savannah biozone starting October 20, 2024.

Morocco, known for its diverse flora and fauna, is the only country preserving Atlas lions. The zoo houses the world's largest number of this species, between 30 and 40 lions.

Through its conservation program, the zoo aims to maintain a healthy population of Atlas lions by promoting controlled reproduction and ensuring optimal animal welfare conditions. The goal is to preserve the genetic diversity essential for the long-term survival of this species.

During the upcoming school holidays, the zoo will host workshops to raise awareness about endangered species and fragile ecosystems. These workshops will focus on the history of Atlas lions and the importance of preserving this heritage for future generations.
