Following the lead of Spain's socialist ministers, King Felipe VI has underscored the robust relationship between Spain and Morocco. «We will continue to advance our bilateral agenda with Morocco, a country with which we must pursue our collaboration in the spirit of friendship and cooperation governing our special neighborly relations», declared the monarch on Tuesday, January 14, during a speech at a gathering of Spanish ambassadors stationed abroad.
King Felipe VI emphasized that «relations with the Maghreb countries will continue to be essential. We are aware of the challenges facing the region, and we want to remain committed to finding solutions (...) We will remain committed to the 5+5 dialogue and to the UfM (Union for the Mediterranean)».
Notably, in his address, the Spanish king sidestepped contentious issues between Rabat and Madrid, such as the opening of customs at Ceuta and Melilla, migration concerns, and the airspace over Western Sahara.
