The National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE) announced on Monday the launch of green energy access for its medium-voltage (MV) customers.

«ONEE, which plays a central role in implementing the national energy strategy aimed at transitioning to a sustainable, low-carbon, and competitive energy model, is taking a new step by opening access to green energy for its MV customers», the Office stated in a press release.

With this move, ONEE reaffirms its role as a driving force in the development of Morocco’s renewable energy market—a role it has embraced since the adoption of Law 13-09 on renewable energy, by serving both as a catalyst for investors developing green energy projects and as a facilitator for customers seeking to reduce their carbon footprint.

The statement goes on to highlight that early 2025 marks a key milestone, with the delivery of the first green kilowatt-hours to MV customers.

Nearly 60 GWh of renewable electricity have just been supplied by private producers connected to ONEE’s national transmission grid, benefiting several of its MV clients.

These include TANGER MED UTILITIES in the Tangier-Tétouan-Al Hoceima region, SAINT GOBAIN in the Kenitra Free Zone (Rabat-Salé-Kénitra region), and MANAGEM with two sites in Ouarzazate in the Drâa-Tafilalet region.

This development reflects ONEE’s continued commitment to supporting all its customers—Extra High Voltage (EHV), High Voltage (HV), and now Medium Voltage (MV)—by providing access to renewable energy.

Since the enactment of Law 13-09 and the opening of the clean energy market, EHV and HV customers have already received over 21.2 TWh of green electricity.

To date, more than thirty EHV-HV customers—mostly industrial players—are sourcing renewable electricity under Law 13-09, with over a hundred consumption sites.

To ensure the quality and continuity of electricity supply across the grid, while encouraging the large-scale integration of renewable energy into the national mix, ONEE is rolling out major initiatives to develop flexible energy solutions and electricity storage systems to address the intermittency of renewables.

ONEE is also undertaking an extensive program to expand and reinforce the transmission network, with a fivefold increase in annual investment planned by 2030.

By enabling MV customers to access clean, cost-competitive electricity, ONEE is actively contributing to a more equitable, inclusive, and forward-looking energy transition.
