The Moroccan caftan, an iconic piece of the Kingdom’s sartorial heritage, was celebrated on Sunday in Brussels during the first edition of «Moroccan Caftan Week Belgium», an event aimed at showcasing Moroccan craftsmanship, fashion, and haute couture.

The initiative highlighted Moroccan artisanal know-how through a fashion show featuring eight designers from Morocco and Belgium, who presented collections rooted in tradition while incorporating contemporary touches. Held under the theme «Heritage and Radiance of the Caftan», the event offered a modern reinterpretation of this emblematic garment, synonymous with elegance and closely tied to major Moroccan celebrations.

A wide range of refined and trend-driven designs were unveiled, featuring intricate embroidery, revisited cuts, rich velvets, fine silks, and traditional motifs enhanced with pearls and delicate stones, elements reflecting the finesse of Moroccan craftsmanship and a heritage passed down through generations.

Among the designers, Casablanca-based Nihad Fdil showcased fully handmade pieces developed over two years. She emphasized the complexity of traditional embroidery techniques, highlighting the precision and expertise required. «The caftan represents us. It embodies the elegance of Moroccan women and the richness of our traditions. It is a heritage rooted from childhood», she said.

Beyond the runway, the event included a designers’ showroom and an immersive cultural space, featuring a temporary caftan museum tracing the evolution of this iconic garment.

Charifa Douhri, founder of the event, stressed its cultural significance, describing the caftan as more than traditional attire: «It is a source of cultural pride and identity». She added that the event aims to promote this heritage internationally while building cultural bridges between Morocco and Belgium.

The exclusive event welcomed over 250 guests and aims to establish itself as a key platform for Moroccan craftsmanship in Europe while strengthening ties with the Moroccan diaspora.
