British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced his resignation on Monday, bringing an end to a tenure that marked a significant chapter in relations between Morocco and the United Kingdom.
«Every decision I've taken has been about putting the country I love first. That is why I will resign as leader of the Labour Party», Starmer said in an address. The Labour Party will now begin the process of selecting a new leader, with a successor expected to be chosen by September.
For Morocco, Starmer’s 23 months in office will be remembered as a turning point in bilateral ties. It was under his government that the United Kingdom, on July 1, 2025, endorsed Morocco’s autonomy plan for Western Sahara. The position was maintained despite pressure from the Labour Party’s left wing, which has traditionally been sympathetic to the Polisario Front. Parliamentary questions submitted to the Starmer government on the Sahara issue reflected those internal divisions.
One of the leading contenders to succeed Starmer as both Labour leader and prime minister is Andy Burnham, the former mayor of Greater Manchester, who returned to the House of Commons following a by-election on June 19. British media have widely cited Burnham as a frontrunner, and many Labour MPs quickly rallied behind his candidacy. His election is believed to have accelerated the pressure that ultimately led to Starmer’s departure.
Morocco and the United Kingdom are linked by an association agreement signed in October 2019. Since January 2025, Rabat has also enjoyed support from a dedicated group within the Labour Party. The Labour Friends of Morocco group is chaired by MP Joe Powell.
