Seven people were wounded in an attack in Cambrils, when a car drove into them earlier this morning. According to the BBC, the Spanish police have killed 5 suspects in Cambrils, a coastal town in the comarca of Baix Camp, province of Tarragona, Catalonia, Spain. The alleged terrorists were shot by the police to stop the attack, the police say. «The attackers' vehicle overturned and when the men got out they were quickly fired upon by police, media say. One was reportedly brandishing a knife», explains the BBC. The suspects were wearing explosive belts and a series of explosions were carried after the attack in Cambrils.
Thirteen people died and dozens were injured in an attack that targeted one of Barcelona’s busiest area. A van hit the crowds in Las Ramblas, a street in central Barcelona, popular with tourists and locals alike, on Thursday afternoon. The BBC states quoting eyewitnesses that the van, a rented one, «deliberately targeted people, weaving from side to side».
Spanish local media indicated that the suspect escaped the scene and the police arrested two other suspects related to him. Meanwhile, the «Islamic State in Iraq and Syria» claimed responsibility over the deadly attack. In a statement published on the socalled Amaq news agency, the terrorist group said that attack was carried out by «Islamic State soldiers».
A Moroccan national linked to the attack
According to the CCN, the victims that were killed in the Barcelona van attack in 24 hours are from the following countries : «Spain, France. Germany, Holland, Argentina, Venezuela, Belgium, Peru, Romania, Ireland, Cuba, Greece, Macedonia, UK, Austria, Pakistan, Taiwan, Canada, Ecuador, USA, Philippines, Kuwait, Turkey and China», the Catalan government said in a statement on Friday.
On Thursday, the Spanish police arrested two suspects linked to the one who was driving the van in the Ramblas attack. One of them is Moroccan national identified as Driss Oubakir who claimed that his documents were used to rent the van.
«Local media say he is in his 20s, and was born in Morocco. However, latest reports suggest he has told police he was not involved, and that his documents were stolen», the BBC said today. The third arrest was later made in Ripoll, a city in the province of Girona, Catalonia, Spain.
For the record, an explosion took place on Wednesday evening in Alcanar, a Spanish municipality of the Catalan comarca of Montsià, in the Tarragona province, where one person died. The police suggests that «the residents at the house had been preparing an explosive device», BBC reports adding that the incident is lined to Las Ramblas attack.
