Morocco is one of the countries that could be impacted by the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA), a United States federal law that imposed sanctions on Iran, North Korea, and Russia, especially when it comes to weapons.

According to Spanish newspaper Defensa, the Kingdom was recently interested in buying Russia’s S-400 missile system, an anti-aircraft weapon system developed in the 1990s by Russia's Almaz Central Design Bureau as an upgrade of the S-300 family.

But with the restrictions imposed by CAASTA, Morocco is forced to turn to the American arms market instead. Citing sources close to the file, the Spanish platform reveals that Morocco will conduct extensive negotiations with the United States to reach an agreement on the purchasing of MIM-104 Patriot, a surface-to-air missile system.

«Morocco’s negotiations on the American surface-to-air missile system will rely on the US-led war launched against countries that purchase the S-400 missile system, including China and Turkey», the same source said.

The MIM-104 Patriot is a surface-to-air missile system, used in particular by the United States, Germany, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, the United Arab Emirates, Spain, Greece, Israel and Qatar.
