«Morocco appreciates the constructive peace efforts by the current US administration to reach a just, lasting, and equitable solution to the Middle East issue», Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita said, Wednesday, in a press release.
Answering a question on the position of Morocco on the peace plan announced on Tuesday by US president Donald Trump, Bourita said that the resolution of the Palestinian issue is key to stability in the Middle East.
«Morocco followed with interest the presentation of the vision of the President of the United States of America Donald Trump on the Israeli-Palestinian issue», he said. «Morocco will examine its details very carefully», he added.
Meanwhile, Morocco has noted «elements of convergence with the principles and options that it has always defended in this matter, namely the two-state solution and the negotiation between the two parties as the preferred approach to reach any solution, while maintaining an openness to dialogue», Bourita added.
«Acceptance by the parties of the various elements is, indeed, fundamental to the implementation and sustainability of this plan», said the minister, underlining that, while the economic dimension is important, it must be complemented by a political dimension.
Al-Quds’ status must be preserved
On the other hand, the Minister announced that Morocco «considers that the status of Al-Quds must be preserved», stressing that the final decision must be discussed between the parties in accordance with international legality.
By the same token, Bourita reiterated the position contained in the «Appeal of Al-Quds» of 30 March 2019, signed by King Mohammed VI and Pope Francis. The text affirms the need «that in the Holy City, full freedom of access to the followers of the three monotheistic religions and their right to worship will be guaranteed, so that in Al-Quds Asharif they may raise their prayers to God, Creator of all, for a future of peace and fraternity on the earth».
The minister said that Morocco hopes that a constructive peace process be launched, with a view to a realistic, applicable, equitable and lasting solution to the Israeli-Palestinian question.
