Elements of the prefectural service of the judicial police of Laayoune arrested, in coordination with the services of the General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance, four people for their alleged links to a drug trafficking criminal network.

This security operation, launched Tuesday and which continued until Wednesday morning, made it possible to intercept a refrigerated truck at the entrance to El Marsa zone, near the southern city of Laayoune, in which policemen discovered two inflatable boats and 4 outboard motors suspected of being intended for drug trafficking, said a statement by National Police (DGSN), adding that the driver of the vehicle and his assistant were arrested.

The investigation subsequently enabled elements of the judicial police, with the support of the regional intervention brigade (BRI), to arrest two other members of this criminal network in a coastal area between Foum El Ouad and Tarfaya, in an intervention in which a member of the BRI was forced to use his service weapon and fire warning bullets in order to repel the danger coming from a passenger in a 4x4 vehicle who opposed the elements of the police, the DGSN pointed out.

The search operations led to the seizure of 1,994 kg of cannabis resin, buried in the sand, which was intended for international drug trafficking, in addition to an inflatable boat and five other outboard motors, the statement said.

The suspects, aged between 27 and 59, were placed on custody, while investigations are underway under the supervision of the competent public prosecutor's office, with a view to identifying all the people involved in these criminal activities.
