The next ordinary summit of the African Union, scheduled for February 2025, will see a race between Morocco and Algeria to win the first vice-presidency of the AU Commission, a position that is designated for the northern region of the continent.
On August 3 and July 31, respectively, the two neighboring countries submitted their candidacies to the SADR's representative, Lamine Baali, who acts as dean of the regional grouping. He will forward them to the AU organs, according to Polisario media reports. Other members of the North African grouping, which includes Mauritania, Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, and the SADR, could also join the race.
For the recprd, in 2023, Morocco and Algeria expressed their ambitions to secure the rotating presidency of the pan-African organization for the year 2024. Ultimately, the two countries stepped back and ceded the honorary post to the President of Mauritania, Ould El Ghazouani.
Kenya is set to win the presidency of the African Union Commission in 2025.
