Citrus production in Morocco is expected to drop in 2017 compared to the previous year, according to estimates published today by Fresh Plaza, a portal for the fresh produce industry. The platform spoke to a Moroccan company that sells and exports citrus products to teh US, Europe, the Middle East and the rest of Africa.
Speaking to Issam Mounir from the Company Overseas Market, he insisted that «the firm expects to have about 500 tones of this Clementine variety (Bruno Clementine)», a number that is less than the one recorded last year. «we can say that production is gradually increasing under the government's Maroc Vert program, thanks to which the acreage is expanding», he added.
«We expect our citrus production to fall by between 25% and 30% compared to last year», the same source indicated. Production is increasing, according to Fresh Plaza, as it has not rained enough.
The price of Bruno Clementine is $ 0.9 per kilo (around 9 dirhams) and falls as production hits the market. And as production is increasing, the prices will also be affected.
