Two months ago, Morocco’s Royal Armed Forces launched an operation in Guerguerate to free the border crossing. No international body, including the Security Council or the African Union, has condemned it. The situation on the ground is calm and the process of opening consulates is continuing.
While the Mauritanian people welcomed the reopening of the Guerguerate border crossing and flow of goods and people, several Algerian and Polisario media have relayed in unison the analysis of a Mauritanian political scientist ensuring that Mauritania would have been angered by Morocco’s military intervention.
With the support of the UN and world powers, the Mauritanian head of diplomacy is leading mediation between Morocco and the Polisario. Officially, only Algeria is missing from Nouakchott's contacts.
