The Polisario Front expressed strong condemnation on Thursday following Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez's reiteration of support for the Moroccan autonomy plan in Western Sahara during his visit to Rabat.

«This support means that bilateral relations between Spain and Morocco continue to be based on the systematic violations of human rights that Morocco commits with complete impunity in the occupied territory of Western Sahara», the Polisario Front's representation in Spain stated in a press release.

The statement further criticized Sanchez for missing «the opportunity to bring the Spanish government back to an official position aligned with international law regarding Western Sahara and the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination and independence».

Sanchez had reaffirmed his «unchanged» position on the Sahara issue during a press conference, referencing the roadmap of April 7, 2022, and the Joint Declaration of February 2, 2023. He reiterated his commitment to the «solution proposed by the government of Morocco, on realistic bases».
